Duplex 2205 is a stainless steel with austenitic and ferritic properties, containing about 40-50% ferrite in its annealed state.
We produce top-grade Duplex Steel 2205 ASTM A276 Threaded Bars, which are valuable in various applications but have reduced machinability, with cutting speeds approximately 20% slower than grade 304. The UNS S31803 Hollow Bar is typically associated with the Duplex 2205® grade.
Duplex 2205 Round Bars have significantly higher design strength than 316/316L, allowing for lighter wall construction. As the most widely used duplex stainless steel, Duplex 2205 accounts for over 80% of the market. This alloy offers superior corrosion resistance in diverse environments compared to 316L, which is often chosen for its higher yield strength. Every 2205 alloy is metallographically tested to ensure it is free from harmful phases like sigma. Common applications include welded pipes, tubular components, and formed or welded sheet products, especially in settings where resistance to general corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking is crucial.
Machinability: Cutting procedures with high-speed steel tools are similar to AISI 316. Using carbide-tipped tools, cutting speeds should be reduced by 40% for roughing operations and 20% for finish machining compared to AISI 316.
Fabricability: Nearly twice the force is needed to initiate plastic deformation compared to AISI 304L and 316L, but plastic deformation proceeds easily beyond the yield strength. It can be cold bent up to 25% deformation without requiring heat treatment, though annealing is recommended if SCC-prone conditions exist. Hot bending is possible at 950-1100°C, followed by quench annealing. Tubes can be expanded using normal methods, but a higher initial force is required, and the process should be completed in one step.
Weldability: The material is easily weldable using Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW), GTAW, and GMAW. Heat input should range from 0.5-2.5 kJ/mm, with a maximum interpass temperature of 150°C. Preheat or post-weld heat treatment is usually unnecessary. Typical filler metals are over-alloyed with nickel, such as E2209. Welding with carbon steels, other stainless steels, and nickel alloys is also feasible.
Corrosion Resistance: It offers superior general corrosion resistance compared to AISI 316L and 317L, and welded joints pass intergranular corrosion tests with ease.
